It depends on the search engine as for which algorithm is used to list the sites. Some of them use the H1 tags and alt info for images (as stated before), and some still depend on keywords. It think that making a search engine friendly page doesn't hurt, just don't go over-board with the Search Engine Optimization, as some engines are looking down on these things.
