Designing Website Templates?

I have been messing around with Photoshop for about three years now and I am interested in making my own site free templates . I was wondering if anyone knew any tutorial sites that could help me with this or if someone could just tell me what the usual canvas size is when making a template in Photoshop.

When designing for websites you need to decide how to address multiple screen sizes. While the majority of the US market has 1024x760 screens, many are moving towards wid screens and some still have the old stand by 800x600. While the larger screen makes things look small or might leave gaps in designs, smaller screens often have to scroll ALOT which can annoy users. There are HTML tricks you can use which offer a fluid size for graphics or you can plan for the smaller size while making sure the margins are covered to keep larger screen users happy. There are a couple open source template sites if you do a google search that might be helpful in deciding how to create templates. While you can't copy their HTML you can dig through and see how different designers handled the choices.

Yeah anything under 780px is safe, though it doesn't give you too much room to work with. More people do have bigger resolutions now though, which would allow you to put a lot more on the page.

Also google for web design tutorials or go to a site like Good-Tutorials or Pixel2life. They helped me out quite a bit with doing some of the more modern things that are 'in style'.

I am horrible with photo shop, I can manage to crop pictures and thats about it. I tried to fight with a template once, and all the layers just confused me and I gave up. I would try finding as many Tutorials as possible online, and maybe someone here could give you some tips and tricks to make the process go smooth. Good luck and let us know what you end up with.
