CHMOD for theme install

I went to install SMF for a forum on my personal site about 2.5 years ago. I was told by members and admin on the SMF website that I would need to chmod a ton of my directories, in order to properly install the theme.

This to me, and they even suggested I contact my web hosting provider (which I did, and he jumped on the boards to), was more than unsafe. As he stated to them directly, asking someone to do something unsafe, that could jeopardize not only their site, but others as well (if on a shared server) is not only unprofessional, but asinine. The programmer who made the theme/skin should have coded it proper.

Has anyone else had this issue? Since then, I have yet to install SMF for me personally, but for work related things, we have it installed on our site (of course, new version too), no issues, cept that one back in the day.

That is quite interesting. I am in the process of looking at different forum software for my forum. I have been looking at SMF, as I was told by someone it was good and easy to start with.

Could someone confirm what Alexis said?

I don't ever remember having to chmod a bunch of folders when installing smf, but I've only used the earlier releases. If that was a recently added feature, something is whack about that.

The original post was in regards to installing a theme. I think if you need to open up your dir to every and any one out there willing to take advantage of it, the coder really did something wrong on their end. There is now way I would allow that to be done for any forums I run or help on.

Thats like be just parking my new 07 in the mall parking lot and leaving my doors unlocked with keys in the ignition!

I don't think something like that would be SMF's fault, it was probably some un-experienced coder.

I've been using SMF for about a month now and I haven't heard of anything like that. Right now I am constantly changing themes because I can't quite find one that is perfect!
