Is SMF Well Known?

I had honestly never heard of SMF before I came here and started reading. Soon after a community of which I am a member converted to it, and so I am slowly learning.

So how well known is this system?

I don't know the actual statistics, but I would have to say that it's just as well known as phpbbX as far as the free forums go. I started using phpBB2 but then switched to SMF through an phpBB 2 SMF converter and haven't looked back since!

I agree with codejunkie, however I think that phpbb may be just a bit more popular! However, for the most part, the majority of the people I know that have used them both prefer SMF to phpbb.

Britlady, maybe you've heard of it under its full name, Simple Machines, or visited the URL, simplemachines.org. I had my first SMF forum way back when it was pretty new, which must be about three years ago.

The thing that really drew me to them was their community support, which seemed excellent and was. Not sure if it's still the same high quality, but back then they were fantastic group of knowledgeable people very willing to help newbies.

I knew about SMF , though I am not as familiar with it as VB or Phpbb . I think more people are acquainted with Phpbb than SMF . It's only because I am used to vbulletin that I didn't experiment with SMF yet , but I did visit their forum and I agree that the free support at SMF community forum is very good.

I was also unfamiliar with this until recently, when one of my communities switched to it. So far I am not fond of it, but I have no say in what they do.

The top three that most know are SMF, VB and phpbb. Sometimes people run around with others, but I have seen these three more than I see custom forum setups. Fairly popular, not sure how long any have been around for though.

I've never administrated a VB board but Ican't help but think that if I did, I would prefer it to any free software. It's just the fact that It's not free that makes me not even consider it. There are enough free systems that I can't think of a reason... However, I still think it's the best forum (from a user perspective) software out there.
