Check out first!

Please always be careful when you are hiring someone for copy write work. My company did this, found someone from webhostingtalk and the person had a good portfolio, but ended up skipping out after 2 weeks telling me he would be going on vacation - yet still have email contact the entire time. Our project ended up being over a month late and he was not rehired. I have since seen him spamming his "I will copy write" on a ton of boards, and when ever I see him, I always notify Admin ASAP.

Check the person out, get references, and do your homework - the last thing you want is to have your project late. Esp. if its for a customer!

If you're dealing with copyrights or other legal stuff, I'd go with someone you can meet in real life, such as a local laywer.

Good warning Alexis. It's unfortunate that a good person without references could be passed up because too many bad experiences with the bad apple though.

It's always been the good talkers usually get the best positions. But you could judge a person by the way they presented themselves. Watch for signs of dishonesty and such. On the Internet, when communication is via email and instant messages, it's much easier for the unscrupulous to gain the confidence of the unwary. The not so smooth talker tends to be overlooked, but might prove to be the best choice.

So is there a real testing ground of an applicant if he/she is really right for the job? I'm thinking that employers should look on the previous workplace or job of that individual before hiring him/her. If that person was fired because of a bad characteristic in the job, then the employer should think twice even though the portfolio is that good.
