How hard?

Is it to keep a forum updated? Is one better than the other being more secure, but having to do less updates. Does that even make sense? I hope someone knows what I mean. I am looking for something simple, but easy to update, without alot of having to know "everything".

The less updates, the more time hackers have to figure out how to violate your site.

It's easy to keep an unmodified forum updated. Most you just upload the new files, run the install, and you're done. Things don't start getting complicated until you start modifying your forum. Then you might have to remove or update the modifications you were using as well.

I tend to hold back just a bit. I let other people jump in and find the new bugs. When it looks like the coast is clear, I'll upgrade my forum to the recent version. I agree with MadHatter, the hackers will look for forums that haven't been updated. Been there, done that, learned my lesson.

I think the question of how simple it is, is realitive. If you are good w/ php and have to tools to find the differences so your add ons/plug-ins are fine, then its very simple. If your not and you add anything, then its not as easy.

You want to keep things updated, but you have to beware of bugs and be prepared for the board to be screw sometimes after an update.

I do not have many issues playing with new software, but when its a forum that I have no idea how to work (VB for example), then I need some help. I was told to try and avoid many popular forums as they are constantly being attacked from hackers.

I think maybe starting with a fairly simple forum software (like SMF) would be good. I don't prefer phpbb only for the fact that it is setup different and SMF is quick and easy (sometimes I am lazy I cant help it).
