Lock em down

I have a ton of friends online that run forums for one reason or another, yet a ton still have issues with spammers, the bots or the people. Most I know will lock down the forum so that active members can only see certain areas, some allow for activation with a capcha or by mod/admin only. Anyone else have tips for this?

Sadly the people issue will always be there. I am so sick of the drama that some people try to stir up, but I guess that's always an issue on forums. So long as people can hide behind their computer screens, people will continue to be obnoxious.

As for spammers, our solution is to fully moderate all member's first several posts and ban spammers immediately. If someone looks suspicious, they stay in a fully moderated usergroup until we get to know them better. The moderators have a tougher time than anyone, but the members don't ever see the garbage that the spammers tried to post. I'm interested to hear how others deal with this issue too.

I like the Capcha's but they don't stop the Obnoxious Twits.

There is no real solution about this problem but we could lessen it. Make the members know each other and when there is a person that is suspicious then the established members could just report the names of those suspicious posters. This way, everyone is helping to keep the boards clean.
