Posting rules for links?

What kind of posting rules do you have for linking on your forum? For example, do you allow people to link to other sites using an affiliate link in their posts? Do you let people link to their blogs or to other forums?

My favorite forum has a subsection for misc advertising for the sake of advertising. Signatures can have a text link to any site which follows the TOS/rules of the forum, but all advertising must be done in the subsection. It works quite well as it gives people a place to advertise and if you don't care you can ignore it completely.

You can use 3 links in my forums on 2 rows.
You cannot link to a direct competitor forum (in some cases, in other forums I don't have this rule).
You cannot place affiliate/referral links AT ALL
You cannot link to adult/warez etc. content

The only people I allow to do it are established members, and they have to put it into the proper forum.

I can't just have random people joining a forum only to advertise their darn site. Everyone needs to contribute something worthwhile and prove themselves to the community first.

Admin Scholar has a point. Only established members or more possibly the dedicated members could have the chance to post their own ads as a signature. This is one way of spamming for some people. They will just register and give one post with a signature as an advertisement.

As long as the links aren't to shady or pornographic sites, I do not mind people advertising in their signature. What really sets me off is if a new person only JOINS to advertise their site, and then makes a spammy looking thread about it.

Okay - I don't feel so bad about my rules then. I don't let anyone post an advertising link until they have 500 posts. By then they have given a lot to the board, and I don't mind giving back.

I too hate it when people join just to spam. I can always tell by their usernames what they are up to. Names like workathomemom or bestonlinegifts are a dead giveaway for people who register just to spam.

I think 500 is a bit much. I know it could take me years to get that many posts on a forum. I normally use my portfolio as a link in my signature alot of places, which is more of a "look what I do" as opposed to "buy from me". I try not to just post to up my count either, but I would feel obligated to try and get enough posts to have the sgnature I want, or I would just leave instead.
