It depends on the search engine as for which algorithm is used to list the sites. Some of them use the H1 tags and alt info for images (as stated before), and some still depend on keywords. It think that making a search engine friendly page doesn't hurt, just don't go over-board with the Search Engine Optimization, as some engines are looking down on these things.

It's good that they are starting to look down on these techniques. Content is key, it is that you should focus on, not tricks that can get you noticed faster.
