Advertising forum using adwords

Has anyone tried getting traffic to their forum using Google adwords. I was thinking I could put up a freebies section and advertise it with adwords ,but the catch is if the traffic isn't repeat traffic, I could end up spending more in the promotion then I stand a chance of making from the traffic. Is paid advertising any good for popularizing your forum ? Has anyone had any success using either Adwords, ppc or other forms of paid advertising for their forum ?

There are several free ways of advertising you can use to promote your forum. PPC advertising doesn't come cheap. It's only when your forum covers a wide range of topics that you can try advertising on overture ,google etc.Even then if you aren't operating on a big budget , adwords could suffocate you if you are solely depending on it for your forum traffic.

I am pretty sure adwords could be good for traffic, I am not sure how much traffic you would get, but it still is traffic.

My buddy used Adbrite to advertise, and he said he was very pleased with it. He said it was better than Google, and brought him quite a few hits for a low amount of money. It didn't give him many new members though.
