Make your friends and family help. If they don't know much about the subject maybe send them a couple links to "do their homework" before posting. Or make a topic list and divide it up between the people who are helping.

I wouldn't worry too much about 1 user making too many threads, that's how all forums start out, you have to generate the content for people to become interested in your site.

Then after a few months once you have a solid foundation for your forum you can then cut back on the amount of posts you are making.

Or you can make your forum as signature to other forums, as long as it is legal to post signatures in those forums. And not just go to any forums, try to look for a forum that has exact or some topics that it has the same topic with your forum.

Or if you have already put some threads by yourself and you think that it will help answer the question to another forum, you can make your forum a link as an answer to that question.

Unfortunately I'm having the same type of problem, but I don't really have anyone to contact at all that has time / interest in forums or anything of the such...

It seems like people now stick with one site, and one site only. You don't see a lot of people go to a dozen sites anymore. I remember a few years ago when a friend of mine was a member of about 8 forums and he was fully active in all of them. Now he's a "noticible" member of 3, and only fully active in one of them.

Always put the word of mouth out there for friends, etc to help start it up first. I know on a site that I run, I have most of the posts under my belt, but then again its for a control panel (web hosting related) and a ton of them were tutorials.

When I first started my forum I had the same problem - I felt like I was the only one posting. I asked friends and family to help out, and they did do it a little bit, but not very much. I couldn't really depend on them to help me.

Finally I ended up registering about 5 usernames that I posted under, and I did that regularly - tons of posts a day. Gradually the forum built up and other people joined to help me. Now we have a great forum with lots of activity.

So keep it up - if you have a forum with a topic that people will be interested in, they will join. Just build up your content and you'll get there. Good luck!

I have tried making forums "jack of all trades" before to pretty mixed results. Just try to pick one MAIN area to focus on, and let the other sections begin based on demand.

You can't please everyone, but try to know what your forums members would most like to see.
