I agree with this approach. I think you should have a private conversation with the member explaining what you are having a problem with and why, and if it continues, it's time to go.

I have tried that. I explained to him via pms that his attitude was creating problems among the newbies and giving a negative impression of the forum. I also told him that if this continues then I'd be compelled to take stringent action as an administrator of the forum. It has seemingly worked.Thankyou for your suggestions.

There are quite a few members I no longer get along with who constantly try to stir the pot, and siding with upstart jerks who are begging to be banned.

I always try to be fair, but if anyone fires too much flame salvo in my direction...I can get a bit ban-happy for obvious reasons.

I am not perfect, and I have had to make some hard decisions in the past.

Never an easy decision, but one you are sometimes forced to make.

Personally, I try to give everyone as much leeway as possible.

Even I have my limits on what I will tolerate however.

Even if other members are against the banning, you have to stand up for what you feel is right.

I can totally relate to that. It's not gone that far on my forum and God willing won't because I am quite passionate about my forum , but I have seen this causing problems in several other forums culminating in the forum losing good members. That's the reason I wanted to nip it in the bud. If it gives the impression of going out of control , I won't hesitate pressing the red button. Just wanted to give him a chance before turning to the ugly ban button.

Banning should always be used as a last resort. Also depending on the circumstances, you should try to do a temporary ban first as a "warning shot" type deal.

Sometimes members like to force your hand though, and you are never quite sure what the right course of action is.

Wow! Lots of great advice here. I'd have to agree with the majority a good stiff warning and if needed give him the boot. You're there for the whole community and a rotten egg makes the whole board stink.

Most places I've been have an escalating warning sysem with a temp ban, but I definitely would want people who continue to cause problems gotten rid of without hesitation. I don't care why the person has suddenly decided they need to make a stink its not tolerable to other people. I would never hesitate to mete out warnings/bans of people needed them. making exceptions or not doing it causes problems.
