Banning Users and Keeping Them Gone

I have a small problem with a banned user returning to my forum with a new email address and posting a bunch of nasty, hateful stuff all over. I want the guy gone, but need a way to do so permanently without banning other people inadvertently.

How can I do this?

There's a couple things you can do.

First, an IP ban. If he uses the static IP, you can just ban it, and his computer won't be allowed back on your site.

Also, you could moderate new members, and investigate anyone suspicious. After a while he'll get tired of waiting to be approved.

The above mentioned are excellent ways of doing so. My old forum had lots of problems with spam links, so what we did was the first 5 posts are moderated. We still got spam, but none of the members could see it.

Thanks for the suggestions. We have tried both unfortunately. It would appear that his IP is not static; I'm guessing he is on dial up. So IP banning never took, he just came back a few days later.

Moderating posts didn't work either because he behaved for the moderation period, or else he spammed the board with the first five so that his posts started showing up. Then he started his tricks. Plus, this caused a great deal more work for us :P

He/She could also be spoofing IP's, we get that from time to time, its a pain, but for the best thing we have ban all *@mail.ru and that seems to have keep our "buddie" away for the past few months.

I am very nervous about using any blanket bans like that. Too often they end up banning many innocent parties.

I had though about perhaps limiting the email sign up, to begin with. No hotmail accounts-as that is all they used. I have seen that used a lot. How would I do it?
