Captcha Issues

So it seems most Vbulletin forums I visit require at least a couple tries before you get a legible captcha, more often a dozen or more. I just saw the lovely mod to add a question instead, but is there a way to add an audio component. The forum I am looking at setting up is for older people (50+ average) and even a question could be hard for them. Is this possible for Vbulletin or should I continue looking into other forum software?

You're talking about during the registration process right? I am a huge fan of vBulletin so I'd definitely find a way to make it work. If you don't want to use the image verification and you think the question mod is too hard for the people on your forum, then you can always use email verification instead. Could that work?

I like the image verification, I just would like to add an audio as well, kind of like Craigslist has. I'm worried if they have to leave the page to e-mail verify and go back they might get lost. I could spend time registering all of them with me, but I'd like them to be able to do it themselves. They like to pretend they are self-sufficient and we have a computer onsite they can use.

Can I pre-register users on vbulletin? With just a username and password so they could fill out the rest after loggin in?

You can do that, but I don't know that will be your best option. I think adding members manually would get real old, real quick. It would be incredibly time consuming to have to do that everyday. How would the members let you know they wanted to join? That alone may be more confusing for them since that isn't how the majority of forums work.

If you are set on the audio, then I'd suggest you search through some of the mods that have been developed for vBulletin and see if there is one that does that. If there isn't you could always pay someone to develop a custom mod for you.

I do not understand how a question would be easier in audio than by reading it. If they cannot read a text question for captcha, how do you expect them to be able to read any of the posts on the forum?

I think no matter what the software, there are just some crazy captchas out there. Sometimes I hope they have the option to 'hear it' instead, I have seen a couple that even people with perfect vision, it would make them scream!

I always that damn screen capture crap, so alternatives are something that more forum owners should be looking into.

My eyes burn everytime I try to read those damn things, and I certainly am no bot or spammer am I?

Lol, yah its a real waste of time! And most people find it annoying. Is there a better alternative? Its kinda offensive especially if your not a spammer or had no intentions whatsoever.
