Do you pay your mods?

I was wondering if anybody pays their mods, and if so, how much do they pay, what do expect from them, etc. I need some mods, and some content posters, and overall traffic!! How many active members is a good amount to start needing mods?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks.

There is no set number of members. Basically when you can no longer keep up all alone, with everything that is posted, it is time to bring on a mod to help you. That could be different depending on the amount of time you have, on how active your members are, on how volatile your board is.

As for paying, I never have. I just asked members who were around for a long time and were level headed and knew their stuff if they would be interested in helping. Most people jump at it.

Yeah, offering a mod position usually gets takers! However its hiring the right one you need to worry about. Hiring a moderator that doesn't do anything is just as useful as not having one!

You may also run into problems with hiring someone that they get even more of a power trip than just a volunteer mod. I've been thinking about this since I first read it and it gives me real big issues in truth.

You would have problems too in deciding how much to pay. A set amount could lead to them just logging in each day to appear that they were online and not actually doing anything. Paying per post could lead to spamming.

I just don't see it working.

I knew someone who got paid to mod, and he got paid $15 a week for what seemed to be a mostly dead forum. I don't make that much on all my sites put together.

That's what I'm worried about. Also, I don't want to look unprofessional by hiring and firing a new mod every week! I feel that could do something negatively for the moral of the community.

I would love to pay my mods, but I just don't have the income coming in to pay them. They do excellent work.

You could select a moderator from members who voluntarily help members of the forum , spend more time at the forum than other members and have a level head. That way , they'd be doing just what they already do.The only difference would be that they will have the mod functions.

As for the payment , it really depends on the type of forum they are moderate. If you aren't keen on paying your mods , you can allow them a special thread to advertise their product ,services if they have any that doesn't compete with your forum's topic or you could provide other incentives.
